South county roundup: Royal dominates in SCAC East opener

Royal 71, Wahluke 0

MATTAWA — Royal made a statement in its South Central Athletic Conference East opener with a rout of Wahluke 71-0.

All 71 points were scored in the first half, including 44 in the first quarter.

Derek Bergeson scored on 23 and 3-yard touchdown runs and added a 24-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter. The Knights dominated all three phases as Tyler Allred took a 65-yard kickoff back for a score and Avery Ellis had a 49-yard interception return.

Lorenzo Myrick scored twice on the ground in the second quarter.

West Valley (Spokane) 26, Othello 19

SPOKANE VALLEY — Othello could not rally against West Valley (Spokane) and lost 26-19.

Estevan Ochoa rushed for 91 yards with a 2-yard touchdown in the first half. Backfield mate Isaac Barragan had 84 rushing yards and a 1-yard plunge into the end zone.

Girls soccer

Othello 4, Connell 1

CONNELL — Othello scored four consecutive goals to beat Connell 4-1.

Janelly Verduzco scored twice and Emily Mendez tied the game, 1-1, in the 12th minute. Connell had an own goal in the 79th minute.

Hailee Guzman finished with two assists.

Warden 3, Naches Valley

WARDEN — Warden had three different players score in a 3-3 tie with Naches Valley.

Grace Richins, Quinn Erdmann and Arely Rangel scored for the Cougars.

Wahluke 2, Royal 0

MATTAWA — Wahluke scored once in each half and beat Royal 2-0.

Royal head coach Jens Jensen said his team played better in the second half, despite conceding a goal early.

The Knights had a few chances over the final 10 minutes, but could not convert.

Volleyball

Othello 3, Toppenish 1

OTHELLO — Alyssa Freeman had 14 kills and Othello beat Toppenish in four sets 25-10, 21-25, 25-13, 25-20.

Ashley Garza, Clarissa Martinez and Taylor Taff added 6 kills each. Janeisse Alvarez and Halle Parris totaled 14 and 10 assists, respectively, and Julissa Cantu and Ashley Krebs had 5 aces apiece.

River View 3, Warden 1

WARDEN — Warden fell to 0-2 in league play after losing to River View 13-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-13.

Kayla Golladay led the Cougars’ attack with 8 kills.
