ROYAL CITY - The Highway 243 fire has grown to 5,000 acres with 0 percent containment.
Level 3 (get out now) evacuation notices are still in effect in the area along Smyrna Canyon and Lower Crab Creek Road, about five miles south of Royal City, according to officials with the Grant County Sheriff’s Office. Law enforcement has gone door-to-door evacuating residents of approximately 25 homes that are in immediate danger of conflagration.
An evacuation shelter was opened at noon at the Royal City Intermediate School.
State Mobilized fire resources were approved overnight and have been arriving all morning and are now engaging the fire, according to a press release. The Southeast Washington Type 3 Incident Management Team has arrived and has assumed command. Firefighters who arrived on the scene last night are being relieved.
• Beverly Burke Road between SR26 and SR243.
• Lower Crab Creek Road from SR243 to SR26.
No injuries have been reported, but several outbuildings damaged or destroyed. No homes have yet been damaged.
