Royal School Board approves 2019/2020 calendar

ROYAL CITY — The Royal City School Board approved the calendar for next school year during a meeting on Monday, March 25.

“There will be a little bit of difference,” said Royal School District Superintendent Roger Trail. “Normally the first day of school is prior to Labor Day. The decision was made to make the first day after Labor Day to give more time to the construction at Red Rock Elementary School.”

The construction at Red Rock Elementary School will be completed around the start of next school year.

“The architect gave a run down on the current Red Rock construction project, as well as talking about the scope on the bond project,” said Trail.

The district still has a year of planning before construction begins on the middle school and high school.

The school board also talked about making up snow days missed this winter. Trail said that two of the five days could possibly be waived because they occurred during a state of emergency. The board passed a resolution to send a request to the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) to waive the two days. The Royal School District will have to make up at least three snow days.

In other news, the Royal High School Spanish department is looking at adopting new curriculum. Also several teachers from the middle school, along with Trail, will be attending the Ron Clark Academy professional development training in Atlanta, Georgia.
